Multimedia Research Lab Plan

Bob,

The attached documents give the plans for the use of the room (then 3113, now E2506).

Our plans / objectives for this room have not changed. It is a laboratory for our research. Some new ideas have developed since these were written, and some of the work planned has already progressed, but the basic intent is the same.

Here is the plan from those documents:

> Room 3313 is a multimedia research laboratory. Researchers will create new ways of interacting with virtual worlds, work on remote collaborations, and develop mechanisms for electronic distributed classrooms.
>
> The equipment in Room 3313 will be used for the development of network protocols for management and delivery of multimedia streams needed for collaboration and teaching, and which can be scaled to support these multi-stream, multi-party and multi-site environments. A key challenge is the development of efficient and effective floor-control, as well as support for caching and streaming media. This requires extensive technology development beyond the current Internet, to effectively and affordably support quality real-time streaming media, dynamic multicasting, and advanced user interfaces providing additional function and improved ease of use.
>
> The equipment installed in Room 3313 will also be used to develop novel teleeducation techniques that support interaction between instructor and students during the lecture, or as interactive “on-line office hours”, and also support interactions among students in their learning and assignments. Related to this is support for collaboration that uses advanced image processing to improve communication by assuring eye contact between parties in conversation. Other research projects that can be pursued using the equipment inlcude new ways of capturing and archiving shared "white board” (with efficient encoding), indexing and synchronization of white board, presentations, audio and video, etc. and making these easily used by students with a variety of connections to the Internet.
>
> The equipment installed in room 3113 will also play an important role in facilitating our research in immersive and intelligent teleconferencing. Unlike the traditional single fixed view teleconferencing system, we will develop new techniques that will provide immersive 3D views of the participating audience and lecturers. The system will automatically interpret the scenes and actively guide the video and audio capture system to provide the best viewing effect. Such a system requires hardware components such as pan/tilt/zoom camera arrays, microphone arrays and large 3D displays.
>
> In summary, we propose to use Room 3313 to support research in distance learning, immersive and intelligent teleconferencing, scientific visualization, and many other related areas.

The equipment in our order is consistent with that specified back in June 2002 when we planned for 3113. Of course we update that with the changes in available technology.

As a research facility, it BELS should not be the expected to support E2 506 as you do a teaching lab. (The same could apply to the Simularium). Of course we appreciate your help, and need it for getting the infrastructure -- especially the networking -- to work properly. Faculty using these rooms -- ON AN EXPERIMENTAL BASIS -- have been told that this is not a classroom nor a teaching lab. (On the Simularium, they begged to use it before we were ready.)

I am currently about to hire tow or three more undergraduates to provide staff support to this work and the rooms we have: E2 180 (Simularium), E2 595, E2 599E and also E2 506. So they will be the first responders to helping faculty -- when we are ready next quarter -- to use those rooms EXPERIMENTALLY in their research related to technology in teaching and other graphics and multimedia research.

What are you looking for beyond this? I want to use E2 506 and need the equipment we listed. Next phase is the cameras, and we have about completed our selection of those.

Do you want to meet and discuss? (With Steve and Glen?)

Thanks

Pat
